Not only would you have to pay over $1K plus shipping for an OD from him, but wait for months and months. He repaired my B-W overdrive driveshaft housing several years ago, and has done other work for me. I don't know a lot of machinists, but Mickey Gustafson of Bakersfield Volvo overdrive fame is one of the best. With a 10 tooth pinion, I think it would make a great poor man's ruxtell - though not era correct.īy Ricks - Surf City on Friday, Aug11:16 am: Don't really like to weld them together, maybe an extra bearing in the front mounting flange for the overdrive?Īnyone who has seen the innards/been there/done that?
There are still many more of them around, if I just figure out how to connect a loose output shaft from the gearbox with a front part of a drive shaft. I was surprised to find the output shaft from the gearbox so long that it protruded almost all the way through the overdrive unit? I had expected some more straightforward type of coupling at the front, just like the rear, but with this design I would have to have the output shaft from the gearbox too, to make the overdrive function - and it was stuck in the box, not enough time to disassemble that unit & to home I went without the overdrive. so I asked the seller if I could take just the overdrive part. $65 was cheap, but there was no way I could fit that greasy chunk of junk in the packed family sedan all the 800 miles home. I saw an 80's Volvo transmission at a swapmeet when on vacation last month. Now, I'm not going to start competition with the great guys in Bakersfield, but just thinking of the shipping costs back and forth to California makes me interested in figureing out if it's practical/possible to make one for myself. I've read about the Bakersfield overdrives made by cutting the driveshaft tube & welding flanges for an overdrive - see pictures & discussion in those threads: Volvo/Laycock overdrive in the driveshaft - howto?īy Roger Karlsson on Friday, Aug09:47 am: Model T Ford Forum: Volvo/Laycock overdrive in the driveshaft - howto?
